Beautiful and amazing to hear that Tibetan Monks have traveled all the way from India to help bring peace and justice to Ferguson. Here is what one eyewitness in Ferguson said: “They walked in, well more like glided, and the whole crowd gasped and embraced them. They stood at the corner and joined the protesters. I gotta up my meditation. The peace that oozed from them was infectious. Incredible. They came from India to be with us.” They will be at the Healing Arts Center this week building a World Peace Mandala.
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon announced yesterday afternoon that Highway Patrol Capt. Ronald S. Johnson, a Ferguson native, would take over security, and vowed that officers would take a different approach to handling the massive crowds that have taken to Ferguson’s streets each night. Not only did Johnson march with the protesters, but he vowed to not blockade the street, to set up a media staging center, and to ensure that residents’ rights to assemble and protest were not infringed upon. Officers working crowd control, he said, have been told they must take off their gas masks. By last night, the heavy riot armor, the SWAT trucks with sniper posts, and the hostile glares had disappeared. A stunning change in tone radiated through the suburban streets where protests had turned violent each of the last four evenings following the police shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. So happy to see the tide is turning. Peace and love to the people of Ferguson.
Happening NOW: Thousands of New Yorkers are staging a sit-in in the middle of Times Square chanting, “Hands up, don’t shoot” to support the people of #Ferguson. Every 28 hours in the US, a person of color is killed by racist police terror. Rest in Peace to Mike Brown, Eric Garner, Rekia Boyd, Oscar Grant, Ramarley Graham, Amadou Diallo and too many more.
Howard University students take a stand against police brutality in Ferguson. What a beautiful sign of solidarity.
“I’ve always had the feeling that life loves the liver of it. You must live and life will be good to you, give you experiences. They may not all be that pleasant, but nobody promised you a rose garden. But more than likely if you do dare, what you get are the marvelous returns. Courage is probably the most important of the virtues, because without courage you cannot practice any of the other virtues, you can’t say against a murderous society, I oppose your murdering. You got to have courage to do so. I seem to have known that a long time and found great joy in it.” ~Maya Angelou
Wow. This is powerful. Udi Segal, a 19 year-old Israeli from Kibbutz Tuval, was supposed to be drafted into the Israeli military on Monday, July 28, 2014. Despite the law obligating him, like most other Jewish Israelis his age, to join the military after graduating high school, Udi refused and was sentenced to 20 days in military prison. Such a courageous young man. May he inspire others to follow suit.
“Justice cannot be achieved through bombing. The tears shed by Israeli mothers are the same as those of Palestinian mothers. By gathering those who are against the war we want to make visible the knowledge and vision which is more powerful than globalized violence. This could become a turning point for the peace movement.” ~ Sabine Lichtenfels, co-founder of the peace research center Tamera, Portugal & co-initiator of the Vision Camp.
We Refuse to Be Enemies : Vision Camp in Israel/Palestine
The Middle East is exploding in violence. In the last two weeks the war has killed more than 1000 people, the vast majority of them in Gaza, with more than 100 children amongst them. Due to the extensive bombing of even schools, mosques, hospitals and private homes people can no longer find protection or shelter. Hatred, fear and anger are at a peak in the whole region.
In this turbulence, peace workers from Israel, Palestine and other countries are holding a five-day vision camp in the Westbank. In the middle of the war they hold a peace vigil and create a frequency of calmness in which mutual perception, sharing, deep listening, clear thinking and vision building is possible. They say, “We refuse to be enemies.” And, “Together we can give a clear sign to end the war.”
For its protection and success the vision camp needs international accompaniment and publicity. The war in Gaza and Israel is not a local conflict but another breakout of the global war system – just like Syria and Ukraine. War is the unavoidable result of a society which follows the hypnosis of fear and separation – on economical, ecological, social and spiritual levels. Let us leave the war system whereever it is possible. Stay online and accompany the vision camp with your thoughts and prayers. We invite people all over the world to join in meditation on Monday morning (sunrise) and Tuesday evening (sunset and the end of Ramadan).
