Wow, how quickly the tables have turned in Ukraine. During a rally in central Lviv on February 24, local riot police knelt as they apologized to residents for taking part in the crackdown on protesters in Kiev’s Independence Square aka Maidan. Lviv, a city of 760,000 near Ukraine’s Western border with Poland, sent thousands of of people to Kiev to fill and defend Maidan. On February 19, the city declared independence from the government of President Viktor Yanukovych, who was ousted three days later by parliament. Volodymyr Parasiuk, a 26-year-old protester from Lviv, became a hero on February 21 when he denounced a EU-brokered peace deal and instead called from Yanukovych’s immediate ouster. Subsequently, many of Lviv’s police fled the city, but these men have decided to ask forgiveness from the people.

This powerful new tactic used by protesters in Ukraine forces the opposition to reflect on their actions. On Dec. 30 at noon, protesters in Kiev held mirrors up at police officers for a full 30 minutes, to commemorate the night of Nov. 30 when riot police used excessive force to break up a peaceful rally on Independence Square. The mirrors seemed to say, “Look at what you have become.” Protestors held posters that read, “Who and what are you protecting?”

Romanian protesters tear down the fence of the exploring perimeter of US energy giant Chevron in Pungesti, Romania on December 7, 2013.

Hundreds of protesters have broken into a Chevron site after the US oil giant resumed its search for shale gas in northeast Romania. RT’s Lucy Kafanov reports from the scene, where clashes ensued as riot police started streaming in.

Some 400 people gathered on Saturday in the village of Pungesti, according to local media.

RT’s Lucy Kafanov reports that the demonstration kicked off quite peacefully with the protesters chanting “Chevron go home.”

“The situation then escalated. Some people had run across the road towards the Chevron property, there was a bit of a commotion, and we saw the protesters run into the property; the surrounding perimeter fences were taken down,” Kafanov reports. Local media said people were able to tear down fences to 20 acres of land owned by the company.

Riot police officers were called into the area, which made the situation “very heated” as clashes between the demonstrators and the police ensued.

“We did see some demonstrators injured, as well as police officers injured. They were taken away in medical vans. We also saw probably about four or five arrests, possibly more, we’re still not confirmed on the numbers,” Kafanov says.

Following the incident, the US company later announced it was suspending activities in the area. “Chevron confirms the suspension today…due to the activities of protesters,” Chevron said in a statement.

“The one hope for the future lies, I believe, in Sacred Activism – the fusion of the deepest spiritual knowledge and passion with clear, wise, radical action in all the arenas of the world, inner and outer. We have very little time in which to awaken and transform ourselves, to be able to preserve the planet, and to heal the divisions between the powerful and the powerless. Let us go forward now with firm resolve and profound dedication.” ~Andrew Harvey

“As I contemplate the impacts that Fracking is having across the globe, the success and the losses – I realize the only way to stop this destructive act of extracting resources from our precious Earth is by building and uniting a stronger movement around the globe. The people who know what is happening must unite, and must educate and inspire others to join our movement by showing them what truly is at stake. Only when we get the masses out on the front lines will we have a chance to conquer this beast that threatens the very fabric of our future and those to follow. When I was in Pennsylvania and saw some of what has happened to their state, the rivers that have been poisoned the land that has been destroyed and the fight that continues on, I felt deeply saddened by the ignorance of the human race. Their fight has been strong in Pennsylvania, with some success, but with more destruction as the industry continues to drill on. We are drilling our way to a place of no return as our planet continues to warm and climate extremes become more and more common. Fracking is not a safe bridge away from fossil fuels! Robert F. Kennedy just came out and said again that natural gas is a catastrophe! When will the corporations promoting this harmful extraction wake up and realize that the future of our children is more important then their profits?” ~Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, a 13 year old indigenous environmental activist from Boulder, Colorado.

Xiuhtezcatl’s deep connection with the Earth inspired him to become a voice for protecting the Earth at a young age, giving his first speech at a climate change rally when he was six years old. Xiuhtezcatl is the youth director of Earth Guardians, a non-profit environmental organization that is committed to protecting the water, air, earth, and atmosphere. So inspiring to see such amazing activism from someone so young. It’s time for us all to take a stand and fight for what is right in whatever way we can.
